This book provides students in Universities and Colleges of Educa­tion in Nigeria specifically and in Africa basic essential information about the Sociolinguistic concepts and terminologies and also about the sociology and politics of language. The book discusses such issues as Language and culture, Language and Sex, Language and Class, Bilingualism and Multilingualism, Language Policy and Plan­ning, Political and Education Language Policy documents in Nigeria and English Language learning and usage in Nigeria. The book will serve as a text for students and researchers in Sociolinguistics and Politics of Language.

Femi Akindele is a Senior Lecturer in English and Linguistics at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. He obtained Ph.D with specialisation in Discourse Analysis and Sociolinguistics at the Univer­sity of Notingham, U.K. His areas of interest include Discourse Analysis, Sociolinguistics, Textlinguistics, Communication Studies, ESL, Systemic Linguistic, and Educational Linguistics, and he has several publications in these areas.

Wale Adegbite obtained a Ph.D in Linguistics from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. He now teaches English and Linguistics at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. he works in the area of Applied Linguistics and has several publication in Discourse Analysis, Textlinguistics, Sociolinguistics, and Language in Education. he is particularly inter­ested in Yoruba studies and English as a Second Language.
